Executives on the move

Justin Lin has been named chief economist at the World Bank. Lin, a Chinese national and currently professor and founding director of the China Center for Economic Research at Peking University, replaces Francois Bourguignon, who retired from the bank in 2007.

Edward Bartholomew has been named finance manager and chief financial officer at the Inter-American Development Bank effective Feb. 1 for a three-year term. Previously, Bartholomew was managing director for sovereign liability management at JP Morgan in New York City.

John Maisto has joined the board of directors at ECI Development, a Central American resort and retirement community developer with properties in Belize, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Maisto is a former U.S. Ambassador and a past White House adviser for the Western Hemisphere.

Juan Carlos Ortiz was named director for Latin America at DDB Worldwide Communications, a global advertising and marketing company. Ortiz will be responsible for supervising Latin American and U.S. Hispanic businesses out of Miami.

Diane Smith has been hired to oversee mezzanine finance activities in Latin America for Darby Overseas Investments, a U.S. private equity company.

Lisa McCarthy has joined Spanish-language broadcaster Univision as executive vice president of client development and partnership marketing.

Walter Esquivel has been appointed to the position of executive director of Babson College's William F. Glavin Center for Global Management. Esquivel is also the Luksic Director of the Institute for Latin American Business, which builds and maintains Babson's network of partner schools and institutions across Latin America.

Esteben Canale has been named as the new chief executive officer for Argentina and Chile for the CIT Group, a global commercial and consumer finance company. Canale will begin the company's operations in Argentina.

Alberto Ibargüen, president and chief executive officer of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, has been elected to the board of directors of AMR Corporation and American Airlines. Ibargüen is also a former publisher of the Miami Herald.

Jeff Jacobs, has been named chief marketing officer (CMO) at Qualcomm. In the newly formed CMO role, Jacobs will oversee global marketing, external communications and standards-related efforts. Previously, Jacobs was the company’s head of business development.

Gerardo Vargas Ateca was named as the new director for global clients in the Americas at Grupo BBVA. Vargas will also work with corporate banking, investment banking and the treasury and marketing departments at BBVA’s Mexican division, BBVA Bancomer.
